The Characteristics of Social Networks and Their Role in Contemporary Lexical Change

This article examines the relationship between the communicative characteristics of social networks and mechanisms of lexical change through a theoretical review and illustrative linguistic analysis. It aims to distinguish the formation of new words, the development of new meanings, borrowing, and the situated combination of resources from different languages. The study draws on a purposive synthesis of selected scholarship on computer-mediated communication, the diffusion of lexical innovations, and digital multilingualism; it is neither a systematic review nor a statistical analysis of an independently collected social-media corpus. English expressions and constructed Azerbaijani examples are compared in terms of form, contextual meaning, grammatical adaptation, and communicative function. The analysis shows that innovations encountered on social networks are not necessarily new lexical units: existing words may acquire specialized meanings, while foreign elements may enter local grammatical constructions. Hashtags and visual signs also require analysis of their discourse functions rather than automatic classification as lexical items. Visibility, repeated use, social diffusion, and conventionalization are proposed as distinct analytical stages. This framework clarifies why extensive circulation does not automatically establish a form as part of the general lexicon. The discussion identifies methodological directions for future Azerbaijani corpus research, digital lexicography, and register-sensitive language teaching. No empirical claims are made about the frequency or normative status of the Azerbaijani illustrations.
