Project-based learning (PBL) has attracted considerable attention in English language teaching because it creates opportunities for learners to use English purposefully while investigating meaningful problems and producing authentic outcomes. This article examines the pedagogical effectiveness of project-based learning in English as a foreign or second language (EFL/ESL) classrooms. Drawing on established theoretical perspectives and selected scholarly literature, the study analyzes the potential of PBL to develop communicative competence, integrate language skills, increase motivation, foster collaboration, and support learner autonomy. A qualitative, narrative literature-review approach is employed rather than a classroom experiment. The analysis indicates that projects can provide a productive setting for meaningful interaction, repeated language use, feedback, and reflective learning; however, positive outcomes are not automatic. Their achievement depends on clear language objectives, appropriately scaffolded tasks, equitable participation, and valid assessment practices. The article proposes a practical implementation sequence and an illustrative project for English lessons. It concludes that PBL is most pedagogically effective when treated as a carefully structured complement to explicit language instruction rather than a substitute for it.
